Former UFC featherweight title contender Chad Mendes made it three consecutive first round finishes Saturday night, stopping Darren Elkins in the main event of the prelims from San Jose.Mendes, since a loss to Jose Aldo for the title in early 2012, has spent just over three minutes inside the Octagon - but he owns a 3-0 record in that time.
"I want that rematch. That is the goal," said Mendes, who improved to 14-1 in his career. "I have been working hard to get that belt, busting my butt and I think it shows. It's time."
Mendes credited the arrival of Duane Ludwig, a veteran of the sport, with the recent success of Team Alpha Male. The California-based unit has had a strong two-week run, as Urijah Faber won last week and teammates T.J. Dillashaw and Joseph Benavidez picked up wins earlier on the card.
"It was the missing link," he said. "We have been killing it."
Mendes is the No. 1 ranked contender at featherweight, but Aldo will meet Anthony Pettis later this year before any rematch happens.
