Former Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez was left on the wrong end of a decision Saturday night, as Benson Henderson successfully defended his UFC title in the main event at UFC On FOX: Henderson Vs. Melendez.Melendez was given the fight on one scorecard, but "Bendo" won it on the other two. The loss was just the third in "El Nino's" MMA career.
"I am just heartbroken right now," he said, during the post-fight show on FUEL TV. "It was a tough fight. I thought I got (rounds) one and two, lost three and four, but did enough to win the fifth.
"I'll have to watch it. Benson is a stud, real tricky guy to hit."
Melendez was out-landed by the champion, 92-56 overall in strikes and 68-43 in significant strikes, but did score the lone takedown.
"When I walked forward, I thought I did bigger attacks," Melendez said. "I landed cleaner punches. I thought I came on strong in the fifth."
Despite showing the effects of a separated shoulder suffered last year in training, Melendez said there was no problems, adding "it looks funky, but no excuses."
