Fabricio Werdum served notice to the UFC's heavyweight division that he is ready to compete for the title. Werdum scored a submission via armbar over former interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Saturday night at UFC On FUEL TV: Nogueira Vs. Werdum from Brazil.
With the win, Werdum (17-5-1) has now won three straight and is 6-1 in his last seven. His lone loss came at the hands of Alistair Overeem.
"(A title shot) is exactly what I want," Werdum said. "I have been training very hard for that. I want the UFC to give me a chance to show I am the very best in the world."
Werdum quickly locked up the left arm of Nogueira, who verbally submitted. The submission expert has won eight fights via tapout, including two over legends like "Minotauro" and Fedor Emelianenko.
"It makes me very happy," he said, of the submission. The two engaged in a heartfelt show of emotion after the fight.
