New UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman told Anderson Silva he would grant him an immediate rematch several months ago when word of the bout became official. Now that Weidman owns the title and Silva is no longer holding it, the former Hofstra wrestling standout is sticking by his word.
Weidman picked up the belt and made history Saturday night at UFC 162: Silva Vs. Weidman, knocking out "The Spider" early in the second round with a left.
"Whoever the UFC wants for me," said Weidman, while appearing on the FUEL TV post-fight show. "This is my belt now. I'm holding on to this belt as long as I frickin' can.
"I told Anderson after the fight, 'Let's rematch. You got cocky and let your hands down.' He said, 'You deserve it.' He was very humble, You have a certain respect for a guy after the fight. I love the guy. I feel for him, but I'm happy where I'm at."
Weidman continued, saying, "I think he's an amazing fighter, and I'd think he'd want a rematch."
Immediately following his first loss in several years Silva said he had no desire to face Weidman again. UFC president Dana White, though, believes he will change his tune in a few days after the loss sets in.
"He said a lot of things," White stated. "I think he likes to throw people off. I believe there's nothing more that he wants than a rematch. If it happens, it'll be the biggest fight in UFC history."
White even pinpointed to a possible rematch date, targeting the Super Bowl weekend show from Newark, New Jersey in February.
