Gabriel Gonzaga didn't need to show off his impressive jiu-jitsu skills Saturday night at UFC 162: Silva Vs. Weidman.Instead, he just needed one right hand, flooring Dave Herman and earning the fourth-fastest finish in the UFC's heavyweight division in just 17 seconds.
"I have been training a lot with my coaches (on strength and conditioning)," Gonzaga said. "Renzo Gracie was here helping me."
Gonzaga, though, didn't get the chance to put any improved ground skills into motion. He countered an inside leg kick by the returning Herman and landed the overhand right.
The finish improved the former No. 1 contender to 15-7 in his career and 4-1 in his last five. It was his first non-submission win since 2009.
For Herman (21-6), the loss was his fourth straight. This marked his first fight back since a second failed drug test. He stepped in for an injured Shane del Rosario, the original opponent for Gonzaga.
