Daniel Cormier is at the top of the heavyweight division and UFC president Dana White said when he officially cuts to light heavyweight, a championship shot could be his first test at 205 pounds. His coach Javier Mendez agrees with White and knows the fans want to see Cormier vs. light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
“I 100 percent feel he should get a title shot,” said Mendez to Fight! Magazine. “He was the Strikeforce grand prix champ and people can’t underestimate what it took to win that title. We’re not talking a contender; we’re talking a champion that’s coming down to fight a champion.”
When Strikeforce had no heavyweight champion and the division was shrinking as more names headed to the UFC, a grand prix was held. Cormier outlasted the likes of Antonio “Big Foot” Silva and Josh Barnett for the title.
He defeated Frank Mir in his UFC debut and now takes on Roy Nelson at UFC 166. Cormier will look to remain undefeated as he’s currently got 12 wins.
Cormier-Nelson is set for UFC 166 on October 19 from the Toyota Center in Houston, TX.
