Round 1: Less than a minute in and Cabral takes Mitchell to the mat. He locks in both hooks and takes the back, looking to set up a rear-naked choke. As I said before, Cabral owns 10 wins – all via submission. Mitchell gets to the guard, and Cabral mounts quickly. Mitchell looks for a heel hook, but Cabral slips out and is in side control. Back to the back goes Cabral, who locks in both hooks and is looking for another rear-naked. Mitchell frees himself yet again from the submission attempt. Just all Cabral here in the opening round, as he has shown exactly what he brings to the Octagon.
Round 2: Cabral with a huge right hand that floors Mitchell, and he pounces. Right to the back is Cabral, looking for another submission, but Mitchell transitions and grabs a footlock for a brief moment. Cabral gets free and is into side control. Mitchell once again survives the ground game of Cabral, who just can’t seem to put him away. Mitchell tries a roll/armbar combo, but Cabral avoids it easily and is back in side control. Despite being a submission master, Cabral is showing excellent striking, especially when attacking Mitchell from the top position.
Round 3: More of the same from Cabral, who has had little trouble taking Mitchell down. More excellent transition work, as Cabral goes from submission to submission. Mitchell, though, continues to defend. As we approach two minutes, Cabral has a brief rear-naked choke locked in, but can’t keep it secured. Mitchell tosses up a triangle with a minute left, but after the wear and tear of two-plus rounds, he doesn’t have the energy to lock it in. Cabral escapes and passes, going for a possible arm-triangle choke as the round clicks down. Cabral can’t lock it in and Mitchell survives.
Yan Cabral def. David Mitchell via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
