Round 1: Shields is amped up and ready to go, coming right out after Maia. First thing Maia does: shoot for the takedown. Shields defending well, pushes forward and avoids the takedown. Maia still with the clinch and he takes him down. Shields pulls guard, attacking from his back within the butterfly guard. Maia trying to posture up and land, and does so with a couple of rights. Maia latches on the back, but Shields bucks him off and into half-guard. Excellent defense by Shields. Some nice ground work by Shields. Interesting round to score between these two.
Round 2: Shields, again, comes out fast, throwing a nice set of leg kicks. Both go for a takedown, and it’s Maia getting the better of the grappling exchange, but Shields counters and scores with a takedown. He does appear to be bleeding from the nose area, possibly from when they collided at the start of the round. Shields into half-guard with over half the round left. Shields working hard to keep Maia down as both fighters are using up a lot of energy in this round and not a lot of result. A very unappealing fight but interesting one, as these two are masters on the ground.
Round 3: We had our longest striking exchange, as the takedown wasn’t tried until over a minute into the round. Maia has the advantage, but Shields transitions nicely. Perfect counter from the former Strikeforce champion. Maia lands the biggest strike of the match and goes to the back, scoring with a takedown. Maia trying to lock in a hook, peppering him with shots to the face and Shields flips to the mount. Incredible work by Shields on the ground. The crowd is restless over the lack of action, but this really has been a very technical contest.
Round 4: The crowd seems unsure what to think about this fight, as Shields is working for a takedown hard against the fence, and Maia is defending well. Even Jose Aldo just a few feet from the Octagon seems unsure. The ref has seen enough and gets the loudest ovation in a while by separating them. With just two minutes left, Maia scores the takedown and has time to do some damage in a round that has been uneventful to say the least. The ref quickly warns Maia to work or he’ll stand them up.
Round 5: Well, I’ve got this tied up 2-2, so let’s see who wants it more. Both fighters look exhausted, so it could be one takedown and win the round/win the fight. Maia comes out with a big right that misses, and Shields comes with his own. Shields going for another takedown as we go under three minutes and Maia underhooks and reverses. Shields denies the takedown and they separate. Nice kick to the body by Shields. Maia with a left but it has little behind it and Shields looks the more energetic of the two. Just 90 seconds remain and Shields goes for the takedown, bullying Maia up against the fence. Shields tries to wrap up the legs with 30 seconds left but the ref steps in. Time is ticking and they are going to go out firing.
Jake Shields def. Demian Maia via split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47)
