Two middleweights looking to position themselves in the divisional rankings square off, as Costa Philippou (12-2) puts his five-fight win streak on the line against Francis Carmont (21-7), who is undefeated in his last 10 bouts. John McCarthy is the referee in charge.
Round 1: Carmont shoots and scores with a double-leg takedown. Looked a lot like training partner Georges St-Pierre with that move. Philippou tries to work to his feet, and Carmont re-positions and brings him back down to the canvas. GSP is right in his ear shouting instructions. Carmont nearly secures a choke, but winds up on top after not being able to secure the submission. Nice elbow to the top of the head by Carmont, and Philippou looks for an armbar. Carmont will have none of it and moves to side control. Philippou has the wrist, but Carmont moves and lands a nice shot from the top. Carmont kind of fakes a head-and-arm choke before moving back into the guard.
Round 2: Philippou goes up top with a combo, and Carmont powers through with a double-leg takedown. Nice elbow from inside the guard by Carmont, and he fires off a knee to the body, and another elbow. Philippou looks frustrated by Carmont’s top control, as the fighter remains on top. The ref is warning for lack of action as we approach the two-minute mark, and he stands them up. Philippou appears extremely fatigued, not stringing much together at this point. A third successful takedown for Carmont, who is attempting a kimura, but can’t secure it.
Round 3: Once again, Carmont brings Philippou to the mat and goes to work on punishing him. Carmont posturing up and hammering down on Philippou over and over now, and just as Philippou nearly gets free, he wraps him back up like a blanket. Philippou attempting a guillotine, but he can’t secure it. While the Air Canada Centre was not impressed, Carmont completely dominated Philippou for 15 minutes, finishing with a bit of a flurry.
Francis Carmont def. Costa Philippou via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)
