Anderson Silva didn't do anything different against Chris Weidman than he has in the past Saturday night.However, Weidman did something different himself, knocking the former champion out and taking his UFC middleweight title in the main event of UFC 162: Silva Vs. Weidman.
The unbeaten challenger caught "The Spider" with a left, flooring him and pouncing. Referee Herb Dean stepped in after a pair of unneeded shots connected that sent Silva to bed.
"I worked hard for this fight," Silva said. "I respect my fans, UFC, the fans here; I respect the UFC because it changed my life."
The loss was the first inside the Octagon for Silva, who was attempting to secure his 11th successful title defense. It was also the first knockout loss of his professional career.
"Chris Weidman, tonight, was the best," he said. "He is the new champion. He has my respect. Chris is the best now."
Silva seemed to puzzle Joe Rogan, though, as he mentioned not fighting for the title again, but also not retiring at the same time.
"No, Chris is the champion now," said Silva, in response to whether or not he wanted a rematch. "I don't fight for the belt."
Silva recently signed a 10-fight extension and made mention of it. UFC president Dana White has previously stated that he would be given an immediate rematch, but a loss would mean super-fights were off the table.
