A fighter isn't safe from injury until the fight is officially finished. With 12 seconds left on the clock in his heavyweight debut at World Series of Fighting (WSOF) 2, Anthony Johnson learned that lesson by breaking his right hand. The former welterweight will drop back to light heavyweight when he takes on Mike Kyle at WSOF 5. Johnson fulfills his deal with the promotion after that fight.
"I had a three-fight deal with them," said Johnson to Bleacher Report. "[I'm] waiting until after the fight" to negotiate a new deal. I'm not trying to put the cart ahead of the horse. "I'm just going with the flow, but like I said, I plan on being with World Series of Fighting for a while."
Johnson had a decent record for the UFC, but was cut for missing weight several times. He's had weight issues before and after being with the UFC. For the WSOF, he knocked out D.J. Linderman in round one and took the decision over former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski.
After Kyle fought for the UFC, he eventually landed in Strikeforce in 2006. He stayed until they closed in January, but didn't rejoin the UFC. His return was a 21 second knockout of Travis Wiuff at CFA 11.
WSOF 5 is September 14 from Revel Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. The main card airs live on the NBC Sports Network with two middleweight semifinals taking place for the inaugural title.
We will have Live Coverage Starting at 6:30 CT Tonight for UFC On FOX 8!
