Cheick Kongo never got the offer he was searching for from the UFC and eventually landed with Bellator. The biggest adjustment for Kongo is the tournament, which he is currently in. Kongo took the second round stoppage over Mark Godbeer in the semifinals of the Season 9 tournament at Bellator 102.
“Everything is the same but the tournament,” said Kongo to Sherdog. “It’s a really good thing for myself. I get the opportunity to do two fights and be the next [title] challenger. My third fight would be for the belt and that’s good.”
If Kongo can defeat Vinicius Queiroz at a later date, he gets the title shot.
Kongo spent years for the UFC and ended his run with a first round defeat to Roy Nelson. The French fighter joined Bellator not long after Wolfslair MMA Academy training partner Quinton “Rampage” Jackson did the same.
No word on when the finals of the heavyweight tournament will be.
