UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will get to fight as close as possible to his home state of New York this February, as “Bones” will defend his title against Glover Teixeira.
According to a report by ESPN, the two will comprise the main event for the February 1 card from New Jersey. It takes place the day before the Super Bowl.
Jones asked UFC president Dana White to compete on the card. White told the report, “That’s what the champ wants. We’ll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey.”
This past weekend, Jones survived a grueling five-round war with Alexander Gustafsson. So far, there have been conflicting reports concerning whether the card will be a pay-per-view or air on FOX to coincide with the network airing Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Jones, in a statement released by the UFC, said that “I”m going to fight Glover and I will answer all the critics about the Gustafsson fight. I will fight Gustafsson after I fight Glover.
“I promise you, he will be next.”
