Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett is taking drug testing one step further, as he has agreed to year-round testing.
Barnett, who faces Travis Browne later this year, will be the first UFC-sponsored fighter to do such a thing through WADA, a drug-testing agency.
“Thank you to the NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission) for granting my license & allowing me to make history by being the 1st MMA athlete to do random, year round testing,” Barnett posted on Twitter. “Also thank you to the UFC, Dana White for all your support in this.”
He was approved during a commission hearing on Thursday. Barnett added that the testing will be “for licensing year and upon licensing. They also are stepping up to blood & urine for certain future tests.”
Barnett is hoping that his decision will help to clean up the sport, posting “I can imagine that today may set the precedent from here on and random testing may become the standard for the sport of MMA.”
