The UFC was on shaky water as they debuted The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) in 2006. A memorable finals, which saw Forrest Griffin get the decision over Stephan Bonnar, gained the sport a new fanbase.
Ken Shamrock, who coached the second season opposite longtime rival Tito Ortiz, calls the fight entertaining but lacking skill.
“Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin did a lot for the UFC because they were in people’s homes,” said Shamrock to Bloody Elbow. “People thought it was such a great fight. I don’t agree with that. I think it was an entertaining fight. A great fight would be head movement, counter punches, all those things. It was entertaining. Let’s call it what it was.”
The fight went for three rounds with all three judges scoring it 29-28 for Griffin. It was named Fight of the Year and UFC president Dana White called it the “most important fight in UFC history.”
All three men are currently part of the UFC hall of fame. Griffin and Bonnar were inducted this past July, while Shamrock’s been there for some years.
Shamrock was supposed to return to action for BAMMA this year, but the match was scratched. He’s lately been arguing with White about not correctly paying fighters. White has denied those claims and says Shamrock owes him money from an old lawsuit.
