Liz Carmouche sent the Honda Center - and everyone else watching UFC 157: Rousey Vs. Carmouche - into panic mode when she took the back of Ronda Rousey Saturday night. The underdog challenger, and former Marine, worked for a rear-naked choke before settling for a crank, but was unable to finish off Rousey. Minutes later, she became the seventh victim to armbar defeat at the hands of the ex-Olympian.
"It was a great fight," said Carmouche, the first open gay or lesbian fighter to compete in the UFC. "I thought I had it. I thought I was going to get her with the neck crank, but it was just on her mouth."
Carmouche (7-3) went toe-to-toe with Rousey (7-0) for over four minutes, but couldn't fight off the armbar attempt with just seconds left.
The two fighters made history on Saturday, becoming the first females to compete inside the Octagon. Carmouche had plenty of emotion on her face as she made the walk to the cage.
She later posted on Twitter, writing, "I gave 100% tonight. Thank you for your support. I shall return."
