Lyoto Machida's style seemed to puzzle Dan Henderson Saturday night, as the former UFC light heavyweight champion scored a split decision victory at UFC 157: Rousey Vs. Carmouche. If UFC president Dana White's earlier words hold up, Machida has re-earned a future shot at Jon Jones and the title. "The Dragon" improved to 19-3 in his career.
The crowd inside the Honda Center was very vocal about the lack of offense in the match from both fighters, and Machida apologized afterwards.
"Sorry if the fight wasn't great for you. Thank you for coming," Machida said. "It was a very tough fight. I have a lot of respect for him."
Henderson (29-9) was fighting for the first time since late in 2011 when he defeated Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion landed more leg strikes and body shots, but Machida had a 32-23 advantage in significant strikes.
"Yeah, I was surprised (it was a split decision ruling)," Machida said. "I felt like I dominated the first round, second round and third round."
Jones is set to defend his title in April against Chael Sonnen. He previously earned a submission victory over Machida.
