Nate Marquardt has the dubious honor of taking part in the final Strikeforce fight. The problem was that the end result didn't go as planned. For much of the fight, Tarec Saffiedine connected with shots to the inside of the leg that were unmatched by Marquardt. By the end of five rounds, Saffiedine became the new and finalStrikeforce welterweight champion.
"I think one of the main things was that I over looked Saffiedine subconsciously," said Marquardt to MMA Fighting. "It wasn't something that I did on purpose. I trained very hard for Saffiedine, but I don't know if it was ego that got in the way or what. There were things I should have done in my camp to train for him specifically."
That loss came in January and Marquardt has a chance to prove himself a worthy competitor when he meets Jake Ellenberger tomorrow. It will be Marquardt's UFC return after he was released in 2011 over elevated testosterone levels. He was 10-4 in that first run.
Ellenberger enters the Octagon being 7-2 for the UFC. Those losses came to top ranked welterweights Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann.
They meet on the main card of UFC 158 on March 16 from the Bell Centre in Canada.
Saffiedine hasn't been booked since joining the UFC about two months ago.
