Ronda Rousey didn't want to call herself the UFC bantamweight champion until she earned a victory inside the Octagon. Saturday night, she did just that, submitting Liz Carmouche in the first-ever female fight at UFC 157: Rousey Vs. Carmouche. After surviving an early submission attempt by Carmouche, Rousey found an opening for her patented armbar, scoring a seventh win by the hold.
"In MMA, I've had to learn to be patient and take my time," Rousey said. "I was just trying to do it perfectly on the first try."
Both Rousey (7-0) and Carmouche (7-3) displayed plenty of emotion as they made their way to the Octagon inside the Honda Center. The crowd gave them a standing ovation, and it was evident by the redness of Carmouche's eyes that she had tears prior to the walk out.
For Rousey, the amount of pressure she felt didn't hinder her performance at all. She has been called the face of women's MMA, and lived up to the hype on Saturday night - and made sure to let the rest of the division know that outside obligations will not keep her from winning fights.
"It was different (the amount of press)," Rousey said. "But there is no amount of press that can save these girls from me."
Rousey came to the cage wearing UFC-sponsored gear, as did her entire corner.
