Regardless of where he fits in for a title shot, Daniel Cormier is headed to light heavyweight following his fight with Roy Nelson Saturday at UFC 166.
Cormier, who is already starting the weight-loss process, wants to fight for the title as soon as possible. He knows, though, that what he does vs. Nelson could ultimately decide where he is pegged.
“Things can always change with a great performance,” said Cormier, during a recent press conference. “In the past, we’ve seen that a guy can put himself in a position he probably didn’t think he had before. If you do something unexpected and look really good (you can move right up).”
The former Olympian and unbeaten MMA fighter is thinking solely about “Big Country” right now, saying, “I have a tough fight ahead of me and if I don’t win that fight, it don’t matter what the other guys (at 205 pounds) are doing.”
It also sounds as if Cormier is dropping even if training partner Cain Velasquez were to lose the UFC title that same night.
“(Light heavyweight) is the weight class I am going to fight in for the foreseeable future,” he said. “I have already started to lose weight and am keeping an eye on the division.”
We will have Live Coverage Starting at 5:30 CT Saturday (10/19) for UFC 166: Dos Santos Vs. Velasquez 3!
